Shared Stories, Stronger Connections: A Story-Based Gathering on Dementia and Caregiving

image

May 26, 2025 | 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Online

Join us for a powerful virtual event in celebration of National Caregiver Month.

Hosted by the Call to Mind podcast team based in the 麻豆精品 - School of Nursing and the Sakamoto Lab, this free online gathering invites caregivers, individuals living with dementia, healthcare professionals, and community members from across BC to explore the power of storytelling in dementia care.

This special event will highlight a research project and the second season of Call to Mind: Audio Diaries of Love and Memory Loss, an award-winning podcast centered around the use of intimate audio diaries recorded by family caregivers—capturing the challenges, emotional realities, support-system gaps, and resilience of those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The event is hosted and moderated by Mariko Sakamoto, UVic Assistant Professor of Nursing, podcast host and research project lead. During the event, you’ll hear directly from family caregivers Ashley Sharma and Lana-Michele Armstrong who contributed their voices to the project, as well as a panel of experts including:

• Dan Levitt, BC SeniorsAdvocate, Office of the Seniors Advocate
• Barb Mclean, Family Caregivers of British Columbia, Executive Director
• Cari Randa-Beaulieu, Alzheimer Society of B.C., Provincial Coordinator of Knowledge Mobilization

You’ll also listen to compelling podcast excerpts and learn how the act of recording and sharing stories about dementia and caregiving can reduce stigma, build a stronger caregiving community, and be used to advocate for change.

Mariko will present some early findings from the podcast study, offering insight into how storytelling can foster well-being and connection for caregivers. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists, and receive resources to help you begin recording your own audio diaries or support someone else in doing so.

Whether you're a caregiver, healthcare provider, or simply interested in building empathy and understanding, this event offers inspiration, reflection, and practical tools for sharing and preserving the dementia caregiving journey.

Hope for the Best, Plan for the Rest: 7 Keys to Navigating a Life-Changing Diagnosis

Tuesday, June 17th 2025   7:00 - 8:30 PM

David Lam Auditorium, MacLaurin Building, 麻豆精品

Drs Sammy Winemaker and Hsien Seow have engaged in provider education about the benefits of a palliative care approach for decades. An important missing piece has always been public and patient-family education and overcoming misperceptions about palliative care, so they created a social movement called, The Waiting Room Revolution, in 2021. The movement has grown globally, and includes a podcast, best-selling book, “Hope for the Best, Plan for the Rest,” and workbook. These resources help people facing a life-changing diagnosis and their families early in their illness. They will present 7 simple, actionable keys for patients, caregivers, and health care providers to take that lead to a more personalized care journey. Patients have called the keys “empowering,” “game-changing,” and “hopeful.” This movement represents an example of successful public health palliative care strategies to empower patients, provider, and communities. The presentation is open to the public. Patients, families, and providers are welcome. The event will end with a book signing and light refreshments. Books will be available for purchase on site.

We would like to thank the Office of Vice-President Research and Innovation at the 麻豆精品 for sponsoring this event. This event is free and open to the public. Due to limited seating, pre-registration is required.

4th Annual International Research Seminar EAPC Reference Group on Public Health and Palliative Care

June 18-20, 2025

麻豆精品

Co-hosted by the 麻豆精品 and McMaster University, this research seminar, "Innovating Care: Research and Action for Public Health and Palliative Care," will aim to critically interrogate the landscape of palliative care by actively considering and incorporating principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This seminar focuses on pioneering equity in palliative care through rigorous research and proactive action. We will explore innovative approaches that prioritize social justice, community engagement, and citizen involvement, ensuring that underserved and excluded communities along with others receive the compassionate and comprehensive care they deserve. Sharing collective knowledge from diverse communities and stakeholders, we seek to advance public participation in shaping palliative care policies and practices. Our goal is to create a dynamic platform for dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge exchange, ultimately driving transformative change in palliative care. Join us in our commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and social impact in the field of public health and palliative care.

This June seminar will present a key opportunity for students, post doctoral fellows, early career and senior researchers to come together to discuss and advance global public health and palliative care research. It will provide an open platform to debate critical questions and share evidence of change, while emphasizing the need to transform palliative care practices to be more inclusive, equitable, and community and citizen-centred.
