Marine safety
The UVic marine safety program outlines the requirements for research and teaching activities involving marine vessels. We provide guidance and technical support to ensure your marine vessel activities meet the required safety and regulatory obligations while on the water.
Under Transport Canada, vessels used by UVic for purposes other than recreation are categorized as non-pleasure and are subject to a specific regulatory framework. Vessel type, size, navigable waters and intended use will inform the safety, training and registration requirements under the regulations. This may also include (MASS).
Training is available for UVic researchers operating small vessels.

Boating review form
An initial UVic boating review form must be completed and sent to OHSE prior to going on the water for your research or teaching activity.
The purpose of this form is to ensure vessel registration, operator training, and any other safety requirements are met. This form is intended for first time projects OR projects that have had a major change in scope (change in vessel, crew size, geographic area of operation). Ongoing projects or activities do not need to fill in a boating review form each time they go out on the water.
Small vessel registration
All small commercial (non-pleasure) vessels powered by an engine of 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) or more must be registered with . This may also apply to certain types of MASS. Small vessel registrations are valid for 5 years and are facilitated by OHSE.
If you are acquiring a new or used vessel, please contact OHSE so we can assist with the steps required for registration under Transport Canada.
Small vessel compliance program
All registered UVic vessels are required to participate in with vessel operators receiving the blue decal demonstrating compliance. OHSE will facilitate SVCP renewals to Transport Canada every 5 years via the Small Vessel Detailed Compliance Report.
An Annual Compliance Report is a self-inspection safety check-list completed annually by UVic vessel operators. This report must be kept on board the vessel and filed with your department.
Human powered vessels
Transport Canada defines Human Powered Vessels (HPVs) as kayaks, canoes, row boats, inflatables, river-rafts, or vessels that are equipped with propulsion motors less than 10 HP. At UVic, HPV operators are required to obtain a as the minimum training requirement.
The Human Powered Vessel Safety checklist helps ensure you have met required safety and equipment obligations while on the water.
